MTV

MTV is an American network based in New York City that launched on August 1, 1981. MTV has had a profound impact on the music industry and popular culture around the globe.

MTV2 is a cable network that is widely available on digital cable and satellite television. The original purpose of the channel was to give music fans a place to see constant, commercial-free music videos. Today, MTV2 airs a selection of music videos, other music-related specials, and non-music shows focused on youth culture and pop culture. These shows are aimed at viewers in their teens and early 20s.

MTV Jams is available exclusively on digital cable and runs on an automated eight hour wheel schedule which repeats three times a day, starting at 6am Eastern, and then resetting at 2pm and 10pm. Promotional advertising, other interstitial programming and some events are also carried on the network, along with various theme programming to promote album releases or other happenings in the music world.


VH1 original purpose was to build on the success of MTV by playing music videos, but targeting a slightly older demographic than its sister channel, focusing on the lighter, softer side of popular music. While VH1 still occasionally plays music videos and the Top 20 Video Countdown, its more recent claim to fame has been in the area of music-related reality programming.

VH1 Soul

VH1Soul showcases R&B, funk, soul, and Motown music from past and present decades. Presently, a modest selection of R&B hits from the past ten years, as well as several 80’s and early 90’s hip-hop videos, can be seen on VH1 Soul. Several of the more R&B-influenced, more socially conscious modern-day rappers and their newest videos can also be regularly seen. However, shows focus on different types of music videos. The Channel today features a non-stop blend of all music videos new and old across all theme blocks.

MTVU

MTVU is a 24-hour television channel that is available on more than 750 college and university campuses across the United States, as well as several digital cable packages. It gives advertisers and music promotion companies access to college-age viewers. The music played on the station is primarily indie rock, pop punk and hip-hop.

Fierce TV

Launched in June 2005, the channel’s programs are geared towards the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The advertiser-supported channel struck carriage deals prior to its launch date with DirecTV, Charter Communications, Adelphia, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable of New York City, and RCN.

Music Choice

Music Choice programs dozens of audio music channels for digital and cable subscribers, and produces music-related content for on-demand customers with access to Music Choice On-Demand. Music Choice also offers video and audio music programming for cell phone customers through Sprint, Nextel and AT&T Wireless Services.

BET

BET is currently viewed in more than 90 million homes worldwide and it is the most prominent television network targeting young Black-American audiences. It is the leading provider of African-American cultural and entertainment based programming. Most programming of the network comprises mainstream rap and R&B music videos and urban-oriented movies and series.

REVOLT

REVOLT TV is a US network devoted to music and music related programming from various genres including pop, hip-hop, R&B, EDM, alt rock and indie rock. It has nationwide coverage in many major markets. Co-owner Sean “Diddy” Combs stated the intention of the network is to allow artists to “show your art the way you want to show your art — uncut, raw, uncensored — not destined by the charts and who’s pop.”

CMT

CMT is an American country music-oriented cable television network. Programming includes music videos, taped concerts, movies, biographies of country music stars, game shows, and reality programs.

GAC

Great American Country (or GAC), is a Nashville, Tennessee-based country music cable television network.

Fuse

Fuse is an American national television network dedicated exclusively to music. It features original series and specials, exclusive interviews, live concerts and video blocks. Fuse accommodates a wide range of musical tastes, while targeting a demographic between 18-34 year-olds. It offers music entertainment not only on-air but also on-line, on-demand, in high-definition and via mobile.

Telemundo

Telemundo is an American television network that broadcasts in Spanish. The network is the second-largest Spanish-language content producer in the world, and the second-largest Spanish-language network in the United States, behind Univision.

MTV Canada

MTV Canada is a Canadian (English language) channel devoted to music, talk, lifestyle and documentary programming.

MuchMusic

MuchMusic, now a sister channel of the Canadian MTV channel, was originally launched in 1984. It features a wide range of music-related programming focused on youth culture and pop culture. Also part of the MuchMusic network is MuchMore, a channel devoted to music, music-related programming and pop culture, with its music programming focusing more on adult contemporary music, classic rock, and lighter music than its sister station, MuchMusic. Its programming consists of music videos, films, concerts, reality TV and pop culture shows, including a number of titles licensed from the American channel VH1.

MusiquePlus

MusiquePlus is a Canadian (French language) channel devoted to music and music related programming from various genres including pop, rock, R&B and focuses on a younger demographic than its sister station, MusiMax. It is the French language equivalent to MuchMusic. Within Quebec, the channel has mandatory cable carriage rights.

CMT Canada

CMT Canada is a Canadian (English language) channel which airs country music and family-orientated general entertainment programs in the form of music videos, award shows, concerts, sitcoms and more.

A SIDE

Formerly AUX, A.Side, launched in May 2017. The channel broadcasts music and general entertainment programming aimed at millennials in the form of music videos, docuseries, and live performances, several of which have been carried over from Aux such as Master Tracks and Camera Music.

Stingray

Stingray Video includes a network of genre based specialty channels with 24/7 music video programming available through various cable/satellite providers across Canada. These channels include: Stingray Juicebox – a commercial-free service that broadcasts music videos aimed at kids aged 8 to 14. Stingray Loud – broadcasting music videos relating to rock, modern rock, alternative, punk, and heavy metal. Stingray Vibe – broadcasting music videos relating to urban music such as rap, hip hop, R&B, and reggae. Stingray Retro – broadcasting music videos from the 1980s to the early 2000s.

Vintage

A network focused solely on music performances, interviews, and carefully curated playlists available across Canada via Rogers cable and satellite service and Shaw Communications network. Among the artists featured on Vintage TV Canada are Tom Cochrane, Randy Bachman, Lights, Barenaked Ladies and many other legacy and up-and-coming Canadian talent.

MTV Latin American Networks

MTV Canada

MTVLA (also known as MTV Latinoamérica, MTV Latino or MTV Latin), VH1 Latin America, and MTV Hits are cable television networks aimed at residents in Hispanic American countries. MTV Latino was the initial network launched on October 1, 1993 as MTV en Español. The channels are property of the many other MTV Latin America Networks, a subsidiary of Viacom. The service is headquartered in Miami Beach, but manage through three different feeds in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico. The music genres broadcasted in the networks generally vary from Rock en Español, Pop en Español, to Música Urbana (Reguetón, Bachata, Vallenato, and others).

MuchMusic

MTV Tr3s is a cable, satellite and over-the-air network. It is rooted in the fusion of Latin America and American music, cultures, and languages, bringing the biggest names of Latin artist in pop, urban, and rock music. MTV Tr3s includes lifestyle series, customized music video playlists, news documentaries that celebrate Latino culture, music and artists, and English-subtitled programming in Spanish imported from the MTV España and MTV Latin Networks. The channel is targeted toward bilingual Latinos and non-Latino Americans aged 12 to 34. (We need to remove the old MTV Tr3s from MTV US list.)

MusiquePlus

MTV Brasil was launched on 20 October 1990. It’s aimed to Portuguese speakers and is available in some Brazilian states via broadcast television, in other states via cable. The channels is also a property of MTV Latin Networks, a subsidiary of Viacom. This channel features Brazilian and Portuguese music/musicians, but also broadcast international Top 40 music.

Clubland TV is a music channel broadcasting on Sky channel 383 and Freesat channel 510 in the United Kingdom. It features upbeat pop (during the morning) and dance music videos. The channel is available to stream on smartphones and tablets via TVPlayer. Clubland TV has its own app available on the Google Play Store for Android devices and iTunes for Apple devices where viewers can request videos to be played on the channel.

Channel AKA (formerly Channel U) is a British digital satellite TV channel, owned by All Around the World Productions, available through Sky within the UK and Ireland on channel 385. It is a music channel, focusing on playing upcoming urban/grime/hip-hop music and has helped the breakthrough for acts such as Tinchy Stryder, Tinie Tempah, Dizzee Rascal, Chipmunk, Wretch 32, Devlin and N-Dubz.

Planet Pop is a British music television channel, previously known as WTF (Weekly Top Forty) and Massive R&B.On 27 March 2013, the channel was rebranded as Planet Pop, with programming aimed at a core audience of 16-24 year olds, including The Planet Pop 40 and Party-On Planet Pop.

4Music is a music and entertainment channel in the United Kingdom and available on some digital television providers in the Republic of Ireland. 4Music showcases a range of pop centring on chart hits and current favourites, along with a range of music-themed programmes from Channel 4.

Heat is a British music television channel that is based on the magazine of the same name. Heat also features The Heat-Ometer, its pick of the 20 biggest music videos.

Kiss TV is a commercial music television channel from Box Television available on the Freesat, Sky and Virgin Media digital TV platforms. The playlist is predominantly mainstream Urban Pop, Dance and R&B

Magic is a British music television station owned by Box Television. It plays mainly easy listening music videos and is based on the Magic Radio network also owned by Bauer.

Smash Hits mainly broadcasts general mainstream pop music on a “jukebox” system, where viewers call a premium rate telephone number to select a music video to play. The channel also shows other programmes, such as “Celebrity Selector”, where celebrities pick what music videos are their favourites.

Kerrang! specialises in Rock Music. all of its programme content is music videos, the majority of which is open scheduled, for text requests from their playlist.

Chart Show TV is available 24 hours a day on Sky Digital channel 365 and is part of a bouquet of music channels owned by CSC Media Group, including classic hits channel The Vault, rock music channel Scuzz, texting music channel Starz TV, dance music channel Chart Show Dance, urban music channel Flava and chill-out music channel Bliss. Chart Show TV is also available on Freesat channel 500.

Scuzz is a British music television channel owned and operated by CSC Media Group. It launched on 17 April 2003 and has gone on to be the highest-rated rock TV station on UK satellite.The rock channel broadcasts mainstream rock, pop-punk, and metal and particularly specializes in the hardcore and metalcore genres. Scuzz tends to play more underground music videos than the other British rock channels. The channel has been known to break many UK artists including Enter Shikari, Young Guns, You Me At Six, Bullet For My Valentine, Lower Than Atlantis and more recently Mallory Knox. International bands are often first broadcast on Scuzz TV, the likes of Avenged Sevenfold, Sleeping With Sirens,Pierce The Veil, Letlive, All Time Low and Paramore all first appeared on Scuzz.

Starz (formerly Fizz TV) is a digital satellite TV channel, owned by CSC Media Group. The output of the station is music videos from a range of genres that are currently popular in the charts. The channel also has a heavy interactive texting element, through the viewers being able to send in text messages and pictures to show on screen.
